Isle of Wight OAP impaled eye on toilet roll holder

An inquest was told that a pensioner had died after falling in his bathroom and impaling his eye on an upright metal toilet roll holder.

As a result of the accident, John Garrett, 79, of Well Street, Ryde, suffered a terminal brain injury and died on September 22, 2018, at the Mountbatten hospice.

Wednesday’s inquest (January 8) was told Mr Garrett had a number of conditions including sleeplessness and had also suffered a number of falls.

Carers, who visited him three times daily, found him on September 18, 2018, in the corner of the bathroom. Mr Garrett had fallen onto the toilet roll holder and suffered a traumatic injury to his eye socket, but before he could receive hospital treatment, firefighters were needed to cut Mr Garrett free

In conclusion, the coroner, Caroline Sumeray, stated that Mr Garrett had died as the result of an accident.
