Island Wessex League round-up for January 12

January 12 saw another mixed bag of results for Island sides, with a win, a draw and a loss for our Wessex League representatives.

In the Wessex Premiership, Cowes Sports fell to second from bottom after a home defeat at Westwood Park against Bournemouth Poppies in front of a crowd of 121. Bournemouth controlled the game throughout and had a 0-3 advantage, before Ash Brett scored a consolation goal for the Yachtsman ten minutes from time.

East Cowes Vics were the Island’s star Wessex League team this Saturday, winning 0-4 away to Totton and Eling. Captain Joe Butcher scored a brace of goals for Vics in the first half, with Jimmi Burton bagging his own brace early in the second. Vics now move up to 11th position in Wessex League 1, just a single point behind Newport.

Newport, 8-2 winners against Whitchurch United the previous Saturday, welcomed Verwood Town to St George’s Park. The away side scored first after eleven minutes after a defensive lapse by Lewis Wright. Joe Craig then equalised for Port in the 51st minute. Jared Wetherick had a wonderful chance to wrap the game up for the home team ten minutes from time, when a penalty was awarded for handball, but he blasted the ball against the crossbar. Port remain in seventh position in Wessex League 1.
