Improvisations from a jazz trio delight the audience

Tim Kliphuis, Roy Percy and Nigel Clark

The Tim Kliphuis Jazz Trio entertained a full-to-capacity Freshwater Memorial Hall on Saturday.

All leading players in their own fields, the three musicians have collaborated for 18 years, collaborating to combine different musical genres.

Violinist, Tim Kliphuis, explained the stories and concepts behind their programme, which involves taking well-known pieces of classical music such as Mussorgsky’s ‘Pictures at an Exhibition’ and improvising on the themes of several ‘pictures’ as well as home-made compositions inspired by other famous paintings and sculptures.

Improvisations on works by Bach – a Brandenburg concerto – and Copland’s ‘Fanfare for the Common Man’ and ‘Rodeo’ led to some dazzling musical performances.

As well as Tim, the trio includes guitarist, Nigel Clark, and Roy Percy, on the double bass.
