The New Inn in Shalfleet, which dates back to 1743, has closed, with the family who took on the pub last summer saying the business is no longer financially viable.
The pub, which is part of the Stonegate Group, was taken on by Mark and Veronica Goldstone in July 2024. In a statement posted on Facebook, they said they had invested significant time, energy, and personal funds, into the venue in an effort to create a welcoming community pub for Shalfleet and the wider Island.
However, they said that despite strong local support, the business model meant the pub could not be run sustainably.
“Put simply, the numbers do not stack up in a way that allows the pub to be run sustainably under the existing arrangements,” the statement said.
The Goldstones thanked customers for their support, describing the response from the community as kind and encouraging, but said it had not been enough to make the business work in the long term.
They also paid tribute to staff, thanking what they described as a loyal and hardworking team who helped shape the pub during their time there.
Particular thanks were given to bar manager, Ross, and head chef, Dan, for their commitment and professionalism, as well as Michelle, who helped keep the community informed about events at the pub.
The family said the decision to close had not been an easy one, and came only after careful consideration and exploring all available options.
The pub will remain closed until further notice.
