Half-marathon to raise money for six-year-old

By IW Observer.co.uk Jun 24, 2022

Scott Howard will be walking a half-marathon (13¼ miles)across the Island to fundraise for his six-year-old great nephew, Josh, who has been diagnosed with Metachromatic Leukodystrophy, also known as Juvenile MLD.

Josh was having difficulty with his mobility and, after several tests and scans, the diagnosis of Juvenile MLD was confirmed. It’s an extremely rare and life-limiting condition, affecting around one in 140,000 children.

Unfortunately, there is currently no known cure for the rare disorder.

Scott is raising money to support Josh with anything he might need, and to create as many happy memories as possible before his condition deteriorates further. He will also be donating to charities including Make A Wish and Shooting Star Hospice, who are supporting Josh.

The walk will start at Sandown and, after 13¼ miles, will finish in Ryde. Scott has been able to organise the fund-raiser with support from his employer, South Western Railway (SWR). There will be refreshments at the end of the walk supplied by the Island Line team at Ryde Station.

The walk will take place on Sunday (June 26), starting at approximately 10am in Sandown. Anyone is welcome to join in with the walk to support and help raise awareness. Scott will be walking in fancy dress and encourages others to do so, with the theme of superheroes or favourite characters.
