Freshwater para-badminton athlete, Jack Isaacs, has achieved major success on the international stage, reaching 55th in the world in men’s singles, and 54th in men’s doubles, at the recent European Championships in Istanbul.
His trip was supported by a grant from Freshwater Parish Council, helping him access international competition and gain the ranking points needed to progress. Council clerk, Kirsty Gibson, said Jack’s achievements were inspiring for the community, particularly the young players he mentors each week, adding that the council was proud to support him.
Jack also won double bronze medals at the UK Para Championships, partnering William Smith in men’s doubles, and securing another medal in men’s singles.
He has strong Island sporting roots, having played ice hockey, cricket, and badminton at county level, representing both the Isle of Wight and Freshwater Badminton Club. He became involved in para-badminton last year, after being identified by Badminton England’s Para Pathways team at a county match, and has since achieved strong national results, and been invited to England Paralympic Pathways training camps.
Alongside his own progress, Jack volunteers weekly as a badminton coach for young people in Freshwater, working with his grandfather, Tony Isaacs, to support local players, develop skills, and encourage participation.
Jack said he was grateful for the council’s backing, explaining that competing internationally was vital for his development, and would help him continue supporting young people on the Island. Freshwater Parish Council said they were delighted to support him and proud of his achievements on and off the court.
