False alarm as bomb found at waste centre

Police and an Explosive Ordnance Disposal (EOD) team were called to one of the Island refuge/waste centres on Monday after it was thought a possible World War II grenade had been found on site.
A police spokesman confirmed: “Staff advised that they had found a possible grenade and evacuated the site. An officer attended and obtained a photograph for EOD.
“It looked like a genuine German stick grenade from World War II. EOD attended and advised us that it was a replica. But until the experts looked at it and picked it up, we didn’t know if it was real.
“This caused several hours of disruption and officers only left the site once it was deemed safe. Please do not throw things like this in the bin.”
