Police are investigating allegations that a 14-year-old dog, was run over deliberately by a car on Sunday, leaving her in a critical condition.
Daisy, an elderly dog in foster care owned by local charity, Friends of the Animals (FOTA), was struck by the silver car while on her lead near Victoria Recreational Ground in Newport.
A witness to the incident said: “Poor Daisy was screaming as she rolled under the car which left a tyre impression on her body. There were witnesses who tried to stop the vehicle that sped off and police are involved.
“This devastating and shocking deed has left poor Daisy in a critical condition and her long-term foster mum is in shock and extremely distressed, as are we here at FOTA.
“We would like to thank The Carisbrooke Vets for their initial emergency care and The People’s Vet who are now caring for Daisy. The veterinary costs to date are £1,733.69, any contributions towards Daisy’s treatment would be very much appreciated. All our fingers are crossed for this beautiful girl.”

A police spokeswoman said: “We were called just after 5:30pm on Sunday to reports of a collision involving a car and a dog at the Victoria Lodge Recreation Ground. The driver of the vehicle had left the scene before police arrived.
“We are currently carrying out enquiries, including reviewing CCTV footage, in order to try and determine what has happened. Anyone with information that could help with our investigations is asked to call 101 quoting reference number 44240072084.”

GOOD NEWS!

FOTA has confirmed that Daisy is home.
She is on painkillers due to severe bruising and swelling.
A spokeswoman said: “Daisy is not able to bear weight on her back end. She has a long road ahead of her but what a fighter she is! She is not out of the woods but we will keep you updated as she progresses.
“Daisy’s foster mum now has the hard job as the poor dog can’t even stand up to go for a wee – but there is so much love between them.”
Any donations towards Daisy’s ongoing veterinary bills would be very much valued. Details above.
