A popular woodland footpath in Gurnard has reopened following a major upgrade completed weeks ahead of schedule.
Improvements to the steep path through Spencer Woods, which links Worsley Road to the beach, were fast-tracked thanks to good weather and efficient work by contractors Crown Park.
The project forms part of the King Charles III England Coast Path and includes the installation of three new flights of timber steps, connected by gravel walkways. The upgrades aim to improve safety and accessibility for walkers using the coastal route.
The work was funded by a Natural England coast path grant, contributing to a wider £200,000 investment by landowner Richard Murphy, who has also planted more than 500 trees in the woodland. Mr Murphy said the ongoing improvements are intended as a lasting tribute to his late wife, Lynda, who first envisioned the project.
Cllr Paul Fuller, who represents Cowes West and Gurnard and serves as vice-chairman of Gurnard Parish Council, said: “This is a fantastic improvement for our community. The early completion is a real bonus and I’m especially moved by the story behind this project. A heartfelt thank you to Mr Murphy.”
Michelle Love, service director for highways and community protection at the council, added: “It’s a great example of partnership working and community investment. Our thanks go to Mr Murphy for his continued support and vision.”
