Islanders sailing home for Christmas enjoyed a traditional carol concert from the Isle of Wight Salvation Army Band onboard Wightlink’s ferry St Clare from Portsmouth to Fishbourne.
“Wightlink’s customers were generous in donating to help us with our work,” says Lieutenant Rodney Bean. “We have just finished collected and distributing five tons of food and presents for families in need on the Island and will be opening our hall on Christmas Day for people to enjoy a seasonal meal, singing and fellowship with us.” In 2017, 135 people joined them on the day.
The youngest musician was 13 year old tuba player Kian Williams from Newport. His mother Julie is also in the band. “I’ve been playing for three years and have lots of friends in the band,” he says.
Wightlink Chief Executive Keith Greenfield says: “This was a wonderful way to end our Christmas entertainment for customers. We thank everyone who performed onboard including the Isle of Wight Symphony Orchestra’s string quartet, Newport Jazz Club, Wight Harmony, Ryde Chorus, Way Forward Choir, Platform One and, of course, the youngsters from Binstead and Wootton Primary Schools.
“We will soon be drawing up plans for our 2019 programme and invite Island singers and musicians interested in performing onboard to get in touch.”
