Yarmouth’s Christmas Boys enacted a Mummers Play at the monthly meeting of the Yarmouth Society, at the town’s community hall on Tuesday.
The group, led by Tony Stables, gave a performance of a medieval play with King George, who is introduced as a gallant Christian hero, fights a Turkish knight, and one of them is slain. A doctor is then presented, who restores the dead warrior to life. Other characters are also involved in the story’s telling.
The new script had several modern references to the BBC, President Trump, and Vladimir Putin, along with local mentions of hostelries including The George Hotel, Bugle, Wheatsheaf, and King’s Head.
Around 80 members and guests attended with the Christmas Boys, finishing by singing several Island Christmas carols, including ‘Solent Night’.
There was also free mulled wine and mince pies on offer for the appreciative audience.
Cast: Tony Stables, Spanish Doctor; Brian Crawford, Old Man Almanac; Don Tregear, Fr Christmas; Rogel Gradwell, Valiant Soldier; David Fox, the Hector; Dick Dawson, Little Man Jack and Turkish Knight; Alan Roffey-Jones, King George.
