The Island is to welcome a major influx of visitors next month, as the Isle of Wight Chess Tournament returns to Ryde for a week of competitive and community chess.
The event runs from February 16 to 22 at the Ryde School, with side events taking place at local hotels. With more than 200 players already booked to travel to the Island, the tournament is shaping up to be one of the largest winter chess events in the UK.
Throughout tournament week, there will be free and informal chess sessions, including casual drop-in games and social chess evenings, open to all ages and abilities. These sessions aim to welcome newcomers, families, and anyone curious about the game. Spectators can also watch all the action live at the school.
Tournament director, David Lightfoot, said: “This event isn’t just about competitive chess, it’s about bringing people to the Island, supporting local businesses, and giving residents the chance to be part of something special. Whether you play chess regularly or have never touched a piece before, there’s something for everyone during tournament week.”
