A very special family has been praised for their tireless work to raise funds for the Isle of Wight Association for Spina Bifida & Hydrocephalus (IWASBAH).

Charity treasurer, Wendy Murwill, thanked Donna Woodcock and her family for all the work they do. She said: “This very special family has this year raised an amazing £7,915 by sourcing and selling items to raise funds. Since their fund-raising started in 2016, the Woodcock family have raised an amazing £30,372.

IWASBAH charity trustees and members really appreciate everything the Woodcock family do for us.”

Last week a cheque was handed over by the Woodcock family to Carol Alstrom, the chairman of trustees and Wendy.

Spina bifida is a congenital condition with the literal meaning of ‘split spine’. During pregnancy, the neural tube and spine develop incorrectly. It is not known what causes it, but a lack of folic acid during pregnancy is a known risk factor. Many babies with spina bifida also have hydrocephalus (excess fluid on the brain), which can damage the brain and cause further problems. Spina Bifida can be a challenging condition, but, with the right treatment and support, many children survive well into adulthood.
