Charity concert helps to support young mums

Centre: Malcolm Lewis

On the eve of Mothering Sunday, Shanklin Town Brass Band held a fund-raising concert in aid of the YMCA Mother & Baby Unit.

The Community Band, aimed at those over 50, joined the Youth Band at Shanklin United Reformed Church. Conducted by Malcolm Lewis, they regaled the audience with performances as varied as ‘Bandstand Boogie’, ‘Abide With Me’ and ‘The Muppets’ theme song. To avoid any accusations of bias, the concert opened with ‘Portsmouth Chimes’ and ‘Marching Saints’!

Around £600 was raised to help the YMCA continue offering the service. Co-ordinator, Jo McGrath, told those present about the supported housing offered to young mums and their babies when they do not have a safe place to stay. “Each member is given access to mental health support, life skills and parenting advice to help them move into their own accommodation and live happy, healthy lives,” she said.
