Call for Islanders to join new poetry programme

Plans are under way to launch the Island’s first Poet Laureate programme, in January 2026, and organisers are inviting Islanders to get involved.

A steering committee is being formed to help guide the project, which aims to celebrate poetry, creativity and community voices through events, school workshops, publications and Island-wide celebrations.

The committee will play a central role in shaping the programme’s vision, choosing the inaugural Poet Laureate, and ensuring it reflects the diversity and character of the Island.

Organisers say they are looking for people from all walks of life who are passionate about literature, the arts and community engagement. A formal poetry background is not required, only energy, ideas and a love for the Isle of Wight.

Lottie Begg, project lead, said: “This is a once-in-a-generation chance to put poetry at the heart of Island life. We’d love to hear from anyone who wants to help us create something joyful, inclusive, and truly Isle of Wight.”
