There was an increase in entries over last year, despite the dry summer for the 42nd Calbourne Show at the Recreation Centre, last Saturday.
A total of 66 adult exhibitors and five children entered 329 entries with judges awarding 154 places across seven show categories. Garden produce had the most participents with 45 awarded places, followed by Baking (25), Preserves (23), Flowers (22), Fun (16), Handicraft (14), and Photography (9).
Judges voted best exhibit in show to Wendy Kington-Hill, for a crochet blanket, whilst the public vote went to Heather Strickland’s ‘End of Summer’ floral art display.
Overall show winner was James Kingwell, who earned 40 points (13x1st, 1x3rd). The Dorothy Morris Cup (Top Lady) was awarded to Lisa Blythman-Wood with 20 points (4 x1st, 4 x2nd). Multi-category winners were Anglie Clayton, Joseph, Heather Strickland, and Will Cool.
The show finished with a raffle, trophy presentation, and a fresh produce auction. All monies raised go to the upkeep of the Recreation Centre.
Show secretaries, Helena Hewston and Kate Goldson, said: “It was great to see so many quality entries this year; it makes the hard work worthwhile. The new classes proved popular, especially ‘Adult Garden on a Plate’ with 11 entries. The ‘Men’s Cake’ was the most hotly-contended class. Although overall most exhibitors were female.”
