Burns teenager airlifted to mainland hospital following Cowes boat fire

An Isle of Wight teenage boy has been airlifted to a specialist burns and plastic surgery centre in Swansea, Wales, this morning after he was seriously burnt following a fire in Cowes in the early hours of Monday morning.

A Coastguard helicopter from St Athan flew to the Island from Swansea with a specialist medical team onboard, arriving just before 4.30 am. It is understood that the boy and a family member have been flown to the Specialist Burns Centre.

The long-distance medical evacuation indicates the severity of the teenager’s injuries.

Officers from Hampshire Police are yet to comment on the circumstances of the fire in the early hours of Monday morning and how the youngster’s burns were caused.

Cowes Yacht Haven remains cordoned off this morning.
