A rare blue lobster was found on the shore of Brighstone Beach on Wednesday, by IW Observer reader, Emma McPhail.
The crustacean was seen to be missing his right claw, but Emma confirmed he was still alive: “We tried to help him back into the sea,” she said, “but he didn’t seem to like it, so we let him be. We walked past him 10 minutes later and he’d gone, back into the sea we hope!”
Blue lobsters get their colour from a genetic abnormality that results in the overproduction of a certain protein. Some marine experts estimate that only one in 2,000,000 lobsters are blue.
