And for something a little bit different…

The Heron Smoke House opened at Robin Hill last weekend – and it offers something out of the ordinary.

The new venture is the latest creation from Island chef and restaurateur, Alex Kimber, known for The Heron, in Ryde, and The Braai, at Nunwell Farm. Now, he has brought his distinctive smoke house style to the heart of the countryside, with a new restaurant perched at the top of Robin Hill, offering panoramic views over the valley and across to Brading Downs.

Seating up to 120 guests, the restaurant boasts an open plan bar, and both indoor and al fresco dining options. The menu champions farm to fork dining, drawing on ethical produce from Nunwell Farm and other Island growers and suppliers. The vibe is laid back and casual, and the IW Observer can confirm that the food is delicious.

We were invited to attend a special pre-opening event on Friday, when Alex and his team cooked up the entire menu – and it tasted as good as it looked. Smoking gives an entirely different flavour from barbequing; the smoke is combined with low and indirect heat in an enclosed smoker. It’s hard to describe – so you need to taste it!

The Heron opening is part of an exciting new era for Robin Hill, now owned by local businessmen, Lee Priddle and John Smith, who launched the 2025 season with more than 15 new attractions, including an indoor ice rink, electric boat safari, and mini-diggers.

CEO Lee said: “We’re thrilled to welcome Alex and his team. The Heron brand aligns perfectly with our mission to provide quality experiences and support local producers.”

Alex added: “Robin Hill is an incredible location, and we’re proud to bring our passion for locally sourced, high-quality food to visitors and residents alike.”

The Heron Smoke House is open daily from midday to 5.30pm on park opening days and table bookings can be made via iw.observer/heron. You do not need a park ticket to visit the restaurant – there is a separate entrance, just follow the signs as you enter Robin Hill.
