36 years of helping animals in need

Thirty-six years ago, Helen Sinclair sat at her kitchen table and decided to do something practical to help animals in need.

From that straightforward beginning grew Friends of the Animals (FOTA), a volunteer‑led organisation that has since supported thousands of animals and become a familiar and trusted part of Island life. What started with one person’s determination is now a well‑established charity built on steady, consistent work and a clear purpose.

Over the years, FOTA has achieved much. Thousands of animals have been rehomed. Many more have received essential veterinary care and the second chance they would not otherwise have had. Spay and neuter programmes have helped reduce overpopulation, and long‑standing partnerships with local groups have strengthened the charity’s reach. None of this has happened by accident – it has relied on adopters, donors, fosters, volunteers, and supporters, who give their time and resources because they believe in the cause.

Helen’s own commitment to animal welfare was recognised with an MBE in the 2014 New Year’s Honours list, presented by the Princess Royal.

A spokeswoman for the charity said: “Every adoption represents a fresh start. Every foster placement shows trust. Every volunteer hour reflects commitment. Marking 36 years is not simply about looking back; it is about recognising the real, practical difference this work has made.”

As FOTA looks ahead, they will continue to protect vulnerable animals, promote responsible pet ownership, and work towards a future where every animal has the chance to thrive. The need is still there, and so is the determination that has carried the charity so far.
