Seven-year-old Finley Grundy, a rising star, didn’t just win, he dominated the 417 Flyup Downhill Race, in Gloucestershire two weeks ago.
Racing on a tricky course with fast drops and challenging flat pedal sections, Finley secured the fastest time in the U-9 Boys category. On his first run in the dry he finished 4 seconds ahead of his closest competitor – his time would have been good enough to win the U-11s race.
Even when the weather turned nasty, with 40mph winds and heavy rain, Finley didn’t back down. He battled through a near-slip on a slick corner to post a second run that was only half-a-second slower.
This win propels Finley into first place overall in the series standings, with just one race to go.
He only turned seven this summer, which means he gets to stay in the U-9 category for another year. The future of youth downhill racing looks bright, and it’s on two wheels on the Isle of Wight!
