Mike Christie, a singer and composer from Cowes, set up the Wight Proms Festival, in 2018, to give something back to the Island.
“I am so fortunate in life to have a wonderful career as a singer, having sung professionally since the age of eight as a chorister, and now most notably in the vocal harmony group G4. We are celebrating our 20th Anniversary this year, so, with over 100 headline tour dates, it’s a busy one! But one of the many reasons why I love the Isle of Wight is the serenity and pace of life, and how I feel like I’m on holiday even when I’m working.”
This year, the Wight Proms Festival is ten shows over ten days, from August 9-18, with headliners including actress Miriam Margolyes, cricketing legends, Jonathan Agnew and Phil Tuffnell (AKA Aggers and Tuffers), plus Island favourites, the Plastic Mermaids, for their only gig on the Island this year, and with an orchestra.
The festival offers huge variety, with each show being a totally different genre: musical theatre, comedy, drag, dance, opera, classical and country music. Other stars include RuPaul’s Drag Race UK winner – Danny Beard, West End and Broadway ‘Phantom’ – John Owen-Jones, West End’s ‘Elsa’ in Frozen – Jenna Lee-James, childhood favourite Peter & the Wolf, where kids go free, and even an Ibiza dance orchestra.
“For me, the Island is the best place in the world, and I’m so proud to call it home.”
