It might be the start of a new year, but my priorities haven’t changed. My resolution for 2026 is to build on the work we started in 2025.
I’m proud of what’s been achieved working with Island employers, community stakeholders, schools, and charities, so far. I’m particularly proud to be the first MP in the country to offer T-Level placements – because it’s using my office to give young Islanders the opportunity to develop new skills.
One highlight of 2025 was hosting a Skills Summit, in October, designed to bring Island employers together. It reaffirmed my belief that we can do even more by working together to support Islanders who are not in education, employment, or training. We have to, if we’re to retain them and make the Island an attractive place where young people want to live, work, and learn. That’s why I’m committed to bridging the gap between those leaving education and local employers. We all know the path to university is clearly signposted. But university isn’t for everyone. So, I want to continue working with Island employers, including GKN, Vesta’s, BAE, Isle of Wight Tomatoes, Wight Shipyard, and more, to highlight the apprenticeships, jobs and degree-apprenticeships already available.
Towards the end of 2025, I held two Parliamentary debates on domestic abuse and violence against women and girls on the Island. Sadly, domestic abuse is a hidden issue on the Island. But I’m pleased that the government has confirmed the Isle of Wight will benefit from a Pathfinder Court, in 2026. These courts have already proved effective elsewhere, in reducing court backlogs and minimising trauma for child victims.
There’s still plenty to do, particularly when it comes to cross-Solent transport. Reliable and affordable ferry travel is my daily driver. It underpins our economy, public services, and daily life. That’s why I’m working closely with the Department for Transport to establish a new cross-Solent travel board, and I look forward to welcoming Ministers here in 2026.
Of course, there’s no easy solutions to the challenges we face. But I’m committed to collaborating and working hard to deliver positive change in the year ahead.
