A team of mosaic makers have completed a ‘Smugglers Mosaic’, which was unveiled outside St Mary’s Church, Brighstone, on Saturday.
The community mosaic group of about 25 people, who are led by Alison Mascarenhas, spent several months making the artwork which is 4ft in diameter.
It was originally destined to enhance the outside wall of the toilets in the Brighstone car park, but has been promoted to a central position in the village, outside the Wilberforce Hall.
A crowd gathered for the unveiling and dedication, which was carried out by Rev Jackie Maw and Cllr John Cirrone, after the village council commissioned the project.
The popular Brighstone Barnacles sang their new ‘Smugglers Song’, written by Crispin Keith, to commemorate the occasion.
Over the last four years the group has created six other ambitious mosaics of their own design, and they are on display in St Mary’s Church.
