Time trials in rowing on River Medina

Newport Men’s 8: Vlad Galai (cox), Boris Hare (stroke), Nathaniel Hamilton, Connor Garner, Jake Garner and Chris Clarke.

Sunday saw the second of the 2024 IW Rowing Forum time trials on the Medina, hosted by Newport Rowing Club.

A bright day with a gusty wind gave scullers a challenge, but all crews coped well with the conditions.

In Division One, over the longer 3.4km (2 1/10 mile) course, the fastest time in the division went to a Shanklin Sandown double, in 14m 30s. Newport, giving their 8 its annual outing, with a men’s crew of both Junior and Novice rowers, finished second in 15m 28s. Newport Women’s Masters crew rowed well, with a corrected time of 17m 41s, almost two minutes ahead of their direct competition, and were the fastest women’s coastal crew in the division.

In the shorter 1.7km (1 mile) division Two, Newport had three coastal fours entered, with Men’s Novice, Junior and Women’s Masters. The Junior crew, in a time of 7m 26s, were the fastest coastal boat. The women’s Masters crew rowed well, with a corrected time close to the men’s Novice crew, who finished in 8m 30s.
