The Isle of Wight Squash Academy (IWSA) has praised the efforts of three of their young players.
Finn Husson, Olivia Holbrook and Millie Holbrook competed at the British Junior Championship (BJC) from October 31 to November 3, in the Boys’ U-11, Girls’ U-11 and Girls’ U-15 categories respectively.
The BJC is one of the largest junior tournaments in England, and the level of competition is extremely high. Each player must play five matches to determine their final positions.
Finn, only a week after his 9th birthday, managed to hold his seeding of 17-24 to come 20th out of 39 entries.
Olivia totally out-played her opponent in the quarter-finals, finding some great form. She then played a gruelling and nail-biting five-set semi-final match against a talented player from Wales, finishing in 4th place overall.
Millie, Olivia’s older sister, had the toughest matches of the three youngsters and achieved 23rd out of 31 competitors and also held her seeding. She battled her way through every round, showing strength of character against some very strong opposition. Millie showed composure and determination in a competition environment.
IWSA coach, Adam Dominey, said: “These three players are the next generation of strong talent on the Island, hoping to follow in Amelie Haworth’s (Women’s U-19 BJC Champion 2023) footsteps. They all work incredibly hard, are very dedicated and deserve their recent success.”
The three young players would welcome hearing from possible sponsors to help with travel and other expenses as they progress in the sport.
