The Operation Market Garden’s 80th anniversary

Don Bate

The local history ‘Growing Up In The Bay’ YouTube channel has launched a new film to mark the 80th anniversary of ‘Operation Market Garden’, which took place on September 17-24 in 1944.

Donald Caladine Bate was called up and served in the 21st Independent Parachute Company during the operation, which aimed to open up an Allied invasion route into northern Germany. His family lived in Seaview and Shanklin during WWII, and Don went on to write for local and national newspapers after the war. His brother, Anthony, appeared on stage at Shanklin Theatre before starring in films and TV shows.

The half-hour film is narrated by the Island’s Vice Lord-Lieutenant, Maurice Sheen, with actor, Dominic Pope, voicing the diary of Don Bate. The film can be watched via iw.observer/operation-market-garden.
