Strings tribute to Saxophonist John Coltrane

1 min read

Local jazz guitarist, Nick Page, the inspiration behind the superbly observed and wonderfully played “Isle of Wight Suite”, regrouped in the setting of Strings Bar & Venue in Newport for another insightful evening of the music of saxophonist John Coltrane. Covid-conscious Strings looks after its audiences, ensuring safety first with a convivial atmosphere.

Island-born Norman King enthusiastically led on saxophone, with expert rhythm support by Jon Thorne on double bass and Ken Black on percussion. Nick’s spoken introductions are as interesting as his playing is exciting, making it an evening of education as well as inspiration. Two sets featuring eleven extended performances included two each from the acclaimed albums “Blue Trane” and “Giant Steps”, with the penultimate workout “Resolution” drawn from the equally appreciated “A Love Supreme”. There was even time for “Softly As In A Morning Sunrise” before a happy audience dispersed in time for 10pm closure.
