Stone Age artefacts to Tudor treasures with tea and cake

Storeroom2010’s Cowes Men’s Shed recently hosted an afternoon of history, discovery, and delicious cake, as members welcomed local enthusiast, fossil hunter, and metal detectorist, Adie Butler.

Adie, who has spent decades exploring the Island’s fields, beaches, and cliffs, brought along a fascinating collection of finds, ranging from Stone Age tools to artefacts from the Roman, Saxon, Viking, Medieval, and Tudor periods. Members had the rare opportunity to handle genuine pieces of history, with Adie weaving in engaging stories about the Isle of Wight’s rich geological and archaeological past.

Project leader, Adam, said: “Adie’s passion and knowledge just shone through. He brought the Island’s past to life in a way that was exciting, educational, and hugely enjoyable.”

The talk sparked lively discussion, with Adie examining fossils brought in by members, including the highlight of the day, a mammoth tooth found years ago on the Island. His fossil-hunting tips and anecdotes made the session both practical and inspiring.

Naturally, no Shed event is complete without refreshments. A table laden with cakes kept everyone fuelled, as conversation and laughter flowed. Long-standing member, Roberto Pascoe, summed it up: “It was absolutely magnificent! I learnt so much. It’s days like this that help make Cowes Men’s Shed such a special place.”

With over 190 members, 30 per cent of them women, Cowes Men’s Shed is more than just a workshop. It’s a welcoming hub where people connect, learn, and support each other, helping to reduce isolation and boost well-being.

New members are always welcome. Open Monday–Friday, 10am–3pm. For details, contact meninshedscowes@gmail.com or call 209734.
