Still time to enjoy the IW Open Studio event

The 2024 Open Studios event, which runs until next Sunday (September 8), is now in full swing. The popular annual event, which sees artists and creatives across the Island open their studios to the public, was, this year, organised by a newly-formed Community Interest Company.

Throughout the event you can take the opportunity to wander through studios, local venues, pop-up exhibitions, and galleries, to encounter a rich tapestry of artistic expression. There’s something for everyone, and admission is free at all venues.

Island-born Charlotte Hodge Thomas is one of the artists taking part. Her airy studio at 24 Walls Road, in Bembridge, is filled with her beautiful evocative creations. She will be there each day until September 8, except Tuesday and Wednesday (September 3 & 4), from 11am until 5pm, with free parking available on the road.

Charlotte said: “My paintings are largely a response to the natural beauty of the Isle of Wight, especially its big skies, coastal features, sea and landscapes. My method marries sweeping backdrops of ambient colour with intense attention to foreground detail. I try to capture a sense of place and what it actually feels like to be in the scene.

“Colour, light and a sense of dramatic space and theatre are common themes throughout my work: these ideas carry though to my still life, aquarium art, abstract paintings and collage, which I also enjoy creating.”

Charlotte also undertakes bespoke commissions.
