Shanklin welcomes Scottish dancers

The annual IW Scottish Country Dancing weekend school returned to the Shanklin Hotel from Friday, February 13 to Sunday, February 15, attracting 115 dancers from across the UK and overseas for a fully-booked event.

Teachers this year were Raphaelle Orgeret, from Lyon in France, and Eric Finley, from North Ayrshire in Scotland, who led classes featuring a range of traditional and contemporary dances. Music throughout the weekend was provided by the Craigellachie Band from the south of England, including Isle of Wight residents, Ian and Judith Muir and Ali McCan.

Evening social dances were held on the Friday and Saturday, while teaching sessions took place on the Saturday and Sunday mornings. Many visitors also spent time exploring the Island during the weekend, which included sunny weather on Valentine’s Day.

As well as those attending the full programme, a number of Island residents joined the social dances to meet friends from the Scottish Country Dancing community.

Next year’s weekend school will return to the Shanklin Hotel from February 19 to 21, with Eric Finley and Alice Stainer teaching, accompanied by Ian Muir and the Craigellachie Band.

A beginners and improvers workshop will also be held at 10am on Saturday, May 16, at Wellow Literary Institute hall. Further details are available from Judy on 07587 179570.
