Comedian Ed Gamble’s Electric evening in Shanklin was a night of comedic gold, starting with the support act of Chloe Petts, whose take on homophobia had the packed auditorium laughing from start to finish, interacting with the front rows and identifying a 6-foot 5-inch volunteer who not only tied her shoelaces but volunteered to be a parent of her future child.
Ed’s second-half start highlighted his popularity with the 0-6 CBeebies generation, with his Protein Prince Andrew Gag adding to the edge-of-the-seat humour. When an audience member interrupted his routine about ‘Bat out of Hell’ to say that was the tune she gave birth to, as an alternative to Daughter to the Slaughter, his improvisation was a masterclass.
Donna, another front-row contributer, was asked to compare the Happy Haddock with Chubby’s in Shanklin, which followed into a sketch about the Spinnaker Tower and another about seagulls, and straws he had bought, that needed to be experienced to be believed.
His final take on pain-au-chocolat was a joy of free-spirited jokery, with his trousers at his knee showing tattoos but stopping his blood circulation, the night added to the line of comedy greats that have played Shanklin, which Ed implied was an adjective, after his experience on the ferry and lack of Nando’s on the Island. His promise to return was welcomed by all fortunate to see someone who had his wedding cancelled due to Covid – another hilarious part of the hour-plus routine.
