Shanklin Bowling Club were delighted to present a cheque for over £2500 to Age UK Isle of Wight recently, following a year of fundraising and events.
The club chose Age UK Isle of Wight’s Good Neighbour Scheme as their charity of the year last year, and have been holding race nights, raffles, a carol service, cake sales and other events in order to raise funds for the community-based service.
The charity’s Good Neighbour Scheme provides vital assistance, friendship and support to older islanders. Their team of volunteers offer help with tasks such as befriending, shopping, dog walking and other tasks around the home.
Cherie Earle, club president said: “Mark came to a local WI group and gave a talk on Age UK Isle of Wight, and the work of the Good Neighbour Scheme. I was so impressed by what they do I had to make it the club’s charity of the year.”
During the club’s annual fun day on (September 9), a cheque for £2511 was presented by Cherie and the club’s treasurer, to Mark O’Sullivan, Good Neighbour Scheme team leader.
Mr O’Sullivan added: “I am totally amazed by the amount generously donated by the bowling club and its members. This money will be put to good use, providing older islanders who have no-one else to turn to, with vital help and support. I cannot thank the club enough.”
Shanklin Bowling Club welcomes members of all ages, but specifically provides opportunities for older people who would not normally be able to participate in sport, to come along and play bowls.
