Sandown is celebrating the award of the internationally prestigious Blue Flag for the second year in succession, a recognition of the investment the town has made in beach safety.

IW High Sheriff, Kay Marriott, this week presented the flag to Sandown’s mayor, Cllr Paddy Lightfoot.

The town council has also invested in beach lifeguards, a new lifeguard station, beach cleaning, marker buoys, an accessible wheelchair and commissioned state-of-the-art public toilets at Eastern Gardens.

Mrs Marriott said: “Congratulations to Sandown for achieving the Blue Flag again, a tremendous success for a town council on the Island, and recognition of the work of all involved in the application – the standards are really high.”

Deputy Mayor, Alex Lightfoot, agreed. He said: “This award shows Sandown Town Council’s commitment to one of our biggest assets, our beach. My thanks to the team, and all the partner agencies involved in this success.”

Mr Lightfoot added: “The Town Council recognises the challenges that Sandown continues to face, and successes like the Blue Flag reflects the commitment we have to making progress, as well encouraging others to make a similar commitment to the future of Sandown.”
