Ryde C increase lead at the top of the league in table tennis

Division One

Havenstreet A 2 v Ryde C 8, Ryde A 6 v Ryde Rankers 4, Newport Vics A 5 v Ryde Goshawks 5, Ryde B 8 v Newport Vics B 2

Ryde C consolidated their lead at the top of the league this week after their 8-2 victory over Havenstreet A, whilst their main rivals, Ryde Rankers, lost against Ryde A 6-4.

Ryde C’s Paul Rainford was unbeaten and player-of-the-match against Havenstreet, whose Roger Hookey and Michael Bulpitt claimed their team’s only points against Ryde’s Joe Chapman.

Ryde A had only two players available, Mark Turner and Scott Lawson, but they still went on to beat the Rankers 6-4 including a doubles win.

Newport Vics A and B teams are both trying to avoid relegation, with the A team drawing against a depleted Ryde Goshawks, whilst the B team lost 8-2 to Ryde B. Vics A’s Dave Hilliam was their best performing player with a win against Conal Howells and a doubles win with team-mate, Anna Joyce.

Division Two

Shorwell Spinners 5 v Ryde Rockets 5, Newport Vics C 5 v Ryde Detonators 5, Ryde Rascals 6 v Newport Vics D 4, Ryde Rising Stars 5 v Havenstreet B 5

All four matches played in Division Two were close affairs this week.

Ryde Rising Stars continue with some good results, this week drawing against the strong Havenstreet B team, with Ryde’s 14-year-old Jye Lock unbeaten, and they moved up into second place behind Ryde Revellers. Jye also had success on the mainland this week, winning the plate event in the Worthing Junior 1* tournament.

Ryde Rascals beat Newport Vics D by 6 games to 4, with Newport’s Sam Pascoe player of the week and unbeaten. Newport Vics C drew against third placed Ryde Detonators in an exciting match, with Newport’s Dave Newnham unbeaten.

Shorwell Spinners continued their drive to avoid relegation and held Ryde Rockets to a draw. Player-of-the-match was Ryde’s Tim Wakeley, who won all three of his matches, narrowly losing the doubles along with team-mate, Maggie Preston.

Division Three

St Lawrence Lizards 1 v Ryde Retailers 9, Ryde Rustics 7 v Ryde Frogs 3, Wroxall Warriors 7 v Shorwell Saints 3

Ryde Retailers’ Paul Cates has improved his form recently, winning all three in their match against Division Three leaders, St Lawrence Lizards, after bringing the dominance of previously unbeaten Wroxall Warriors’ Andrew Bailey, to an end the previous week. The Retailers all played out of their skins against St Lawrence, winning the match 9-1, and they now lie in second place behind Wroxall Warriors. Ryde Rustics had a good win against Ryde Frogs, with all three players winning two each, although Kevin Fraser of the Frogs was unbeaten, and the score finished 7-3 to the Rustics.
