Big Mead park upgrade, sea-wall restoration, and a redecorated Shanklin Cliff Lift are among proposals in a regeneration drive under the Bay Area Place Plan, according to a report by Cllr Michael Beston, presented to Shanklin Town Council.
Launched in January, the plan — spearheaded by Isle of Wight Council alongside Lake, Sandown, and Shanklin parish councils — seeks to boost economic growth, invest in infrastructure, and improve residents’ quality of life.
Key projects include restoring Shanklin’s sea-wall, between the Lazy Wave Cafe and Little Hope Beach, rebuilding Shanklin Performing Arts Centre as a multi-purpose community hub, and refurbishing the Diamond Jubilee Clock on Shanklin Esplanade. Enhancements to Big Mead parkland, featuring new playground equipment, picnic benches, and potential WC facilities, have also been proposed.
Updates to Shanklin’s Cliff Lift, with plans for canopy replacement and external redecoration, are among additional works being considered.
Cllr Beston highlighted community engagement efforts at the Bay Area Place Plan’s first AGM, held on November 11, at Shanklin Youth & Community Centre, which saw residents, business owners, councillors, and Isle of Wight Council officers share ideas and feedback.
He noted that comments and suggestions from the meeting will be collated and published soon, ensuring transparency and ongoing consultation.
Residents can access the finalised Bay Area Place Plan on the websites of Lake, Shanklin and Sandown local councils.
