Rampant Ryde and superb Shanklin in this week’s cricket

Senior sides Ryde and Shanklin secured successes at home to mainland opposition, with bowlers Ben Gregory, Tom Durman, Nathan Moore and Matt Lambourne dominating opposition batters.

Hampshire and Premier leagues
Ryde won by 8 wickets at home to Ferndown Wayfarers, in Hants Division One. Opening bowler, Ben Gregory, took 4-31, alongside Tom Durman’s 4-35, limiting the visitors to 110 all out in the 28th over. In reply Durman scored an unbeaten 59 in Ryde’s 112-2 to take 23 points and move to 13th place.

Division Three leaders, Shanklin & Godshill, won by 2 wickets at home to Bedhampton Mariners, with Nathan Moore taking 3-38 and spinner, Matt Lambourne, 2-34 and Harry Moore 2-18. Wickie Sean Phillips caught 2 and stumped 1, to limit Bedhampton to 178 in the 39th over. In reply, Harry Collier hit an outstanding 86 to help the Islanders reach their target, for the loss of 8 wickets, in the 43rd over.

Ventnor II XI lost by 39 runs to Locks Heath, who scored 244 all out, with bowlers Ben Attrill, taking 4-43, and Jake Toulson 3-23. In reply, the Islanders reached 205 all out, with Martin Blackman top scoring with 47 and Neil Westhorpe 33, in the 43rd over.

Ryde II narrowly lost by 10 runs at Burridge, who scored 203-8, thanks to Andy Day’s 3-41. Opener Mark Oatley hit 86, with Lee Hailes the only other player to reach double figures with 32, as Ryde were bowled out for 193, with 3 overs left.

Ventnor lost by 8 wickets at Portsmouth, in Premier One. Choosing to bat first, the Islanders scored 208-6, with Portsmouth reaching their target in the 36th over, finishing 209-2.

Island Cups & League
In the Senior Cup, St Helens overcame Ventnor III, being all out for 203, with Ventnor’s Harry Ridley and Rafe Hawkins taking 3 wickets each. Skipper, Andy Deans, top scored for St Helens with 63, with Ollie Stubbings adding 44. Ventnor’s Mark Price scored 41, and Hawkins added 39, but Rob Holdcroft’s 3-22 led St Helens attack, limiting Ventnor to 149 all out and a win by 54 runs.

Table-topping Newport beat Freshwater by 10 wickets, with the West Wight side scoring 69 in 27 overs. Harry Dye took 4-9 and Aaron Hartup 3-3, followed by Newport openers, Ash Brett (17) and Dye (52), reaching the target without loss in the 14th over.

Northwood won by 9 wickets at home to Shanklin & Godshill 2nd XI, with Shanklin bowled out for 47. Northwood reached their target, losing only one wicket, in the 5th over.

In the Fred Winter Cup, Newport 2nd XI won by 8 wickets away to Shanklin & Godshill III, with Shanklin all out for 51, and Newport losing only 2 wickets to reach the target.

In Division Two, Northwood 2nd XI beat Ventnor IV by 38 runs at Arreton, with openers, Williams Jennings (34) and Jeff Brett (54), contributing to the total of 188 all out, before both being victims of Harry Charlesworth (2-50). Aston Langdon took 3-12 and Jess Glover 1-21. Ventnor couldn’t keep up with the run rate, with opener, Mahesh Puttamadaiah, hitting 39, Charlesworth 28 and Nick Dobson 38 unbeaten, as Ventnor reached 150-4 at the close. Steve Lewis scored 3-14 for 2nd-placed Northwood.

Ventnor 1st welcome Sarisbury, Ryde travel to Shrewton, Shanklin & Godshill visit Locks Heath, with Ventnor II away to Mudeford, and Ryde II entertaining the Trojans.

On the Island, Division One leaders, Newport, play at Ventnor III, Freshwater welcome Northwood, and Shanklin & Godshill II host St Helens.

Division Two leaders Newport II are at home to Ventnor IV, and Northwood II home to Shanklin III.
