Members of Wight Tri turned out in foggy conditions for a new duathlon route at Wellow, on Sunday.
A total of 28 competitors took part in the event, which offered a choice of a 3km (1.86 miles) or 4.5km (2.8 miles) run, followed by 13.5km (8.4 miles) bike laps and a final run. The course took athletes over Wellow Top, along the main road and, for those on the shorter route, through a damp field, before the bike section headed down Wilmingham Lane past Tapnell Farm and over the climbs at Dodpits.
Mechanical problems added challenge to the day. Dan Morgan’s ride was disrupted by a snapped chain on his second lap, while Kelly Carmichael, riding with limited gears after a repair, was forced to push on one incline. All competitors returned safely to the finish.
The predicted time competition proved close, with four athletes finishing within a minute of their estimates. Steve Snary was 44 seconds off, Matt Burgess 18 seconds, while Kev Downer and Arielle Elton‑Waters shared top spot, both just four seconds from their predicted times.
Next on the calendar is the Ryde Harriers’ cross‑country event on Sunday, February 13, at Smallbrook Stadium.
