Mindset Bros were crowned Overall Community Champion at the fourth Vectis Radio Community Awards ceremony, at Caffe Isola, Newport, on Friday.
The group works to improve men’s mental health on the Island through free community meet-ups, walk-and-talk sessions, practical support, and open conversation. And Michele Newton, who believed she was attending to help hand out awards, was surprised to find herself awarded the Vectis Radio Community Personality Award for her work setting up and running the Daisy Ring Bus CIC which provides free transport for Island cancer patients to mainland hospitals. Michele and her her team took over when Wessex Cancer Trust decided to cease providing the services at short notice.
Around 90 people attended the event with High Sheriff, Jacque Gazzard, making the presentations. Mindset Bros’ founder, Ross Taylor, said: “Winning these awards is an incredible honour, but for me, it’s about so much more than that. Sitting around that table with the team, seeing the passion, the unity, and the emotion, that’s what it’s all about.
Ian Mac, Vectis Radio Station Manager and co-host for the evening, said he felt humbled to be among so many people who tirelessly support the Island community. “It’s so important that we continue to recognise and support their efforts all year round – without them, the Island simply wouldn’t function,” he added.
Maggie Currie, who organised the event, said: “It was truly humbling to see the level of support different organisations showed for one another.
“I’d like to thank our panel of independent judges, as well as Stef Burgess, from Caffe Isola, for sponsoring the event.”
