Isle Of Wight Council supports and celebrates apprentices

The Isle of Wight Council has been celebrating its burgeoning apprenticeship programme.

At its recent staff awards an apprentice of the year category was created – with Danielle Harris from Legal Services, the first recipient.

The council currently has 106 members of staff on apprenticeship programme, including 27 new apprentices. It is also supporting 26 apprenticeships in schools.

Danielle Harris from Legal Services recieves her award from director of corporate services, Claire Shand.

“With this week (4 to 8 March) national Apprenticeship Week, it is only right that we highlight and celebrate our commitment in this area,” said director of corporate services, Claire Shand.

“Supporting people to enter work or enhance their skills underpins our ambitions as an organisation to ‘grow our own’.

“We are promoting sustainable career pathways within the council and also across the Island as part of our regeneration strategy.

“Danielle is an excellent example of the many great young people we have on the Island, and we are delighted that she is furthering her career in the council.”

Danielle is currently completing a chartered institute approved apprenticeship programme, while also picking up the workload of a high-profile commercial income stream for the council.

Claire added: “She has excelled as an apprentice by going beyond her original remit and showing not just personal ambition in widening her skills and trade, but also good team ethics in supporting others during a very busy period.”

Other apprentices recognised at the staff awards:

  • Highly commended – Charley Buckett, procurement.
  • Commended – Bethany Eggleton, children’s safeguarding; Charlotte Russell, facilities and fleet management; Izzy Knight, learning and development; Matthew Hennings, benefits changes team.
