A new group has been formed to support investment in sport and facilities on the Island.
The organisation, now known as Sporting Island, was set up in 2024 by former High Sheriff, Graham Biss. Members meet regularly, with the aim of helping place Island sport on a par with mainland areas, amid concerns that participation in some key sports has declined and facilities have fallen behind.
Graham said sport remains an important part of Island life, from grassroots leagues to the development of athletes who go on to compete at higher levels. He explained the group’s purpose is to support further investment, and give people – of all ages – the opportunity to take part in sport at a level that suits them.
The group brings together representatives from the IW Council, public health, governing bodies, and local sporting organisations. Current members have links to the IW Cricket Board, Hampshire FA, Sport England, the Island Games Association, the IW Sports Foundation, Community Action IOW and Sported, alongside council officers and public health representatives.
Initial work is focused on six sports: football, cricket, rugby, tennis, basketball, and netball, allowing the group to focus its efforts. The group says it does not intend to duplicate the work of existing bodies, but to support development and investigate future funding for sport and facilities.
Monthly meetings have included discussions with council leaders, planners about potential Section 106 funding, and clubs exploring new or improved grounds. The group says its next phase will move from gathering information to delivering practical progress.
