A Turkish barber who lives in Ventnor, Emra Salkim and a colleague, Richard Hodson have raised donations in excess of £2,000 to go towards the Turkish Earthquake Appeal Fund.

Emra moved from to Ventnor from Northern Turkey about nine years ago and set up his barbering business, but many of his family and friends still live in Turkey.

With the aid of Mike Gaukroger and Roger Holmes who have supplied collection boxes and leaflets, the donations are still pouring in. A 7.8 magnitude earthquake struck southern and central Turkey and northern Syria on February 6.

Emra said: “My clients and so many other Island people have amazed me with their generosity. So many people are struggling for their basic needs to survive in my home country and I felt I must do whatever I could to help.

“Richard has been a tower of strength and a great help in our fundraising efforts.”
