GREEN FINGERS: Your garden is bursting into life

You might be considering growing something a little different this year, maybe seaweed or rice, following the relentless rainfall we have been experiencing! We’ve certainly had more than our fair share of rainfall these last few weeks and there is little sign of it easing up.

The weather will improve though and, as you will have seen, signs of spring are popping up all over. Early daffodils are already in bloom along the verges and in people’s gardens.
Daffodils will continue to bloom right into April, and these will be swiftly followed by tulips. Snowdrops are in full bloom now and, if you have large clumps, you can divide them once they have finished blooming.

If you have a heated greenhouse then now is the time to start sowing all sorts of seeds for your garden – from annual summer flowers to many of your vegetables.

There’s plenty of time, though, and, if you don’t have a heated greenhouse, then it won’t hurt to hang on a few weeks until the temperatures start to improve.

If you want to have a go at taking cuttings from your dahlias, then it’s time to start getting them back into life. Place your tubers into pots or trays and cover the tubers with compost, leaving the crown exposed. In a few week’s time you’ll have some young shoots appear, which will make ideal cuttings.
