Grassroots football awards recognise Island clubs

Peter Wilson with Partnership of the Year Award

Island clubs were recognised at the prestigious Hampshire FA Grassroots Awards evening, celebrating people and organisations that have made outstanding contributions to grassroots football and nominated by their communities. The event, which took place at Southampton’s Hilton Hotel, was attended by FA Cup and Portsmouth legend, Alan Knight.

Shanklin FC and Shanklin Voluntary Youth & Community Centre were recognised for their joint work with young people with a Partnership of the Year Award. Former youth club member, and now Shanklin FC manager, Peter Wilson, collected the award before their mid-week match. He said: “It is an honour to receive this award on behalf of the club, and youth centre, and it is heartening to see how this partnership has given opportunities to young people, including myself, over countless years.”

Certificates of commendation were presented to Jenny Gearing, of East Cowes Sports, and ex-Binstead and Wootton FCs Edward Sheath. Ryde Saints and Bembridge Youth collected Fair Play awards in the Senior and Junior categories respectively.
