Goodbye to brave and beautiful Cassidy

Our front page superstar in February last year

In February last year, we supported a GoFundMe campaign for then 19-year-old Cassidy Ley, organised by her cousin Jodie Lacey.

The goal was to raise £2,500 to help Cassidy – who had been told she had less than a year to live – make the most of the time she had left. Cassidy had endured a lifetime of agonising medical conditions, including a debilitating skin disorder that caused constant pain and itching, chronic fatigue, spinal curvature, and joint dislocations. She also lived with a serious heart condition, dilated cardiomyopathy, but was not eligible for a transplant due to her complex health needs. She was receiving palliative care.

Islanders took Cassidy to their hearts, raising more than £23,000 – far surpassing the original target. Many local businesses also rallied around to help her.

Cassidy was thrilled to see herself on our front page, which we’ve reproduced above. But she was much more than a beautiful face. She embraced life with courage and compassion, determined to make a difference and help others.

In March, she became an ambassador for Naomi House and Jacksplace, the children and young people’s hospice based in Winchester that supports families across the region.

Among her talents was writing and in April, she wrote a powerful article for us about the importance of hospice care, drawing from her own experience. She told us she was very touched by the kind responses it received.

Although her strength and spirit carried her beyond doctors’ expectations, we received the heartbreaking news this morning from Jodie that Cassidy has passed away peacefully at Jacksplace.

On GoFundMe, Jodie wrote: It is with the heaviest of hearts that we share that Cassidy has passed away. She left us peacefully at Jack’s Place, surrounded by love. Though our hearts are broken, we take comfort in knowing that she is now free from pain and finally at peace.

“We are so grateful for the incredible support, kindness, and generosity you have all shown throughout Cassidy’s journey. The last 18 months meant she was able to do so much thanks to you all. Your love has meant more than words can ever express.

“Cassidy was so Beautiful, Brave, courageous, intelligent, and always smiling despite all she had to endure. She will be greatly missed and forever in our thoughts.

“Please continue to keep Cassidy’s family and loved ones in your thoughts during this difficult time. ❤️”

The IW Observer team sends love and condolences to all who loved Cassidy. She was only 21 – but her’s was a life well lived and she touched the hearts of many. She was truly a remarkable soul.
