Gilten Market returns to Tapnell Farm Park

The 2022 Gilten Beast

This year’s Gilten Market, the only livestock market on the Island, will be held at Tapnell Farm Park on Monday (November 20), with bidding starting at 10am.

The Island is the only place in the British Isles which holds a Gilten Market. It’s always held a few weeks before Christmas, and is celebrated by the current or deputy High Sheriff, gilding the horns of the winning steer – the Gilten Beast – with gold paint.

Holding the market at this time of year encourages Island farmers to produce top-quality beef and fat lambs for Island butchers to buy for Christmas.

The market helps reinforce the important links between Island farmers and butchers and seeks to encourage the public to buy local.
