Funeral firm signs military covenant

Newport-based Life Funerals has become the first funeral director on the Island to sign the Armed Forces Covenant, pledging to support veterans and their families.

To mark the occasion, founder Alex was joined by Troop Commander Captain Symmans and Clive Norman MBE, a veteran of the Parachute Regiment.

The independent funeral director wants to ensure families are aware of the options available to recognise a loved one’s military service, whether through military honours or a personal tribute.

Alex said: “We don’t believe there is a standard way to remember someone, and being a veteran doesn’t change that.

“What matters is that families know what’s possible and feel supported in making the choices that are right for them.

“We never want a family to look back and think, ‘We wish we’d known we could have done that.'”

Captain Symmans said: “It’s encouraging to see a local business recognising the importance of service and making a commitment to supporting Island Armed Forces communities, veterans and their families.”

Life will also help bereaved families access information about military arrangements and connect with relevant Armed Forces organisations, charities, and support services.
Veterans are being encouraged to record their preferences through the company’s free funeral wishes service, helping families understand how they would like their military service recognised.

The Armed Forces Covenant is a government-backed commitment to supporting serving personnel, veterans and their families.

Life Funerals, which launched earlier this year, offers transparent pricing and colourful, biodegradable coffins.
