Football family stands together in this week’s sport

High Park defence block Vectis attack

With wintry weekend weather affecting matches, it was heartening to see past and present Ventnor players, joining with family members, to stand in silent tribute to Phil Morris, a much-respected former Ventnor player and manager, who sadly passed away the previous week.

Cups

Joel Porter, George Terry and Josh Richardson scored for East Cowes Sports in their 3-0 win away at Newchurch in the Memorial Cup Second Round.

The fourth round of the Hants Trophy saw West Wight lose 3-0 away at Locks Heath. Brading, Whitecroft & Barton and Vectis’ matches were postponed due to the weather.

In the Hants Vase, Oakfield Res lost 4-1 at home to AFC Solent.

Sandown & Lake Res v Brading Res was not played.

IW Leagues and Combination

After ref, Peter Cotton, led players in a minute’s silence, Division One’s Ventnor, inspired by Jack Barsdell’s player-of-the-match performance, won 8-1 at home to Osborne Coburg, returning to top the table. Skipper, Emerson Tattersall, netted 4, Charlie Urry twice, and there was 1 each for Neo Lamb and Euan Sargent. The consolation goal came from Harry Green.

An own goal, and goals from Lewis Blackmore, Aarun Ince and Bertie Watson, saw Northwood win 4-1 at home to neighbours, Cowes Res.

In Division Two, High Park beat East Cowes Saints 8-1 at home, with 4 goals from Dan Robjant, and 1 apiece from John Robjant, Chris Dibsdale, Kyle Kilroy and Joe Jackman.

Sandown & Lake won 4-1 away at Niton, with a first-half goal from George Johnson, and second-half strikes from subs, Eddie Johnson (2) and James Ashley.

A Ben Gardner hat-trick and goals from Nathan Roberts, Olly Hammond, Jake Symes, and Tyler and Jay Larbalestier, saw Oakfield win 8-1 away at Pan Community.

After a goal-less first half, an own goal and one from Ed Marsden helped Seaview win 2-1 at home to Newport Res, who scored through a free-kick. Seaview’s first win of the season moved them off bottom place. Keeper, Shane Smith, and defender. Henry Smith, were joint players-of-the-match.

In Combination One, 2nd-placed West Wight Res won 8-1 away at Osborne Coburg Res, with 2 goals apiece from Jordan Flynn and Connal Groom, and 1 each from Simon Merrett, George Saunders and Jude Millar. The win saw them a point off the leadership with 5 games in hand.

Connor Coburn scored for Coburg, and W&B Res beat leaders East Cowes Sports Res 2-0, with Luke Hackshaw and sub, Robert Taylor, scoring in the second half.

In Combination Two, Vectis Res won 5-4 at home to High Park A, with 2 goals apiece from Bubacarr Touray and Lucas Frost, and 1 from Jamie Barratt.

Leaders, Osborne Coburg A, won 5-0 at home to Ventnor A, with goals from Jason Pengelly, Michal Poplawski, Sam Hatton, Charlie Sharpe and sub, Jake Winchcombe.

Bembridge A won 9-1 at home to Ryde Saints Res.

Wessex 

Cowes Sports drew 1-1 at home to Millbrook, with the Yachtsmen coming from behind to level through player-of-the-match, Jake Wright.

East Cowes Vics won 5-0 at home to Fawley, with goals from Harrison Yates, Raff Boyd-Kerr, Jacob Reynolds and Caleb Neale headers, with Neale adding the fifth, a fitting way to celebrate his and twin brother Josh’s 21st birthday. Nineteen-year-old Toby Snow celebrated his 150th appearance by being awarded a bottle of champagne by the club.

Hamworthy beat Newport 2-1, with the consolation goal coming from Joe Butcher.

Women’s

Shanklin Ladies extend their lead, and their 10-match unbeaten run at the top of Division One, following their 2-1 away win at City Ladies, with a first-half goal from Primrose Willis, and the second-half winner coming from Freya Henry.

Wight Eagles lost 4-1 away to Alton Ladies.

Fixtures

In Wessex Premier League, Cowes welcome Laverstock & Ford, with East Cowes Vics away at Romsey Town, and Newport home to Ash Utd in Division One.

Island Division One sees Bembridge home to Cowes Sports Res, Binstead COB welcome Ventnor, Brading entertain Shanklin, Northwood host Osborne Coburg, and West Wight face W&B in the Challenge Cup.

In Division Two, Newchurch are home to High Park, Oakfield face Newport Res, and Pan Community are home to Sandown & Lake.

Combination One leaders, East Cowes Sports Res, welcome Sandown & Lake Res, Bembridge Res are home to Shanklin Res, W&B Res entertain Brading Res with Sandown & Lake Res home to Brading Res in the Hants Vase.

In Combination Two, Ryde Saints Res are home to Newchurch Res, Sandown & Lake A welcome West Wight A, and, in the Junior B Cup, Niton Res host High Park A.

In the Women’s Trophy, Shanklin are home to Liphook United, with Wight Eagles away at City Ladies.
