Folklore theme unveiled for Mardi Gras

Island myths, legends and folklore will shape next year’s Mardi Gras after IW Mardi Gras 2026 was officially launched by New Carnival.

Representatives from schools, community groups and youth organisations gathered at Quay Arts on Wednesday (January 28) for an evening of film and presentations outlining the creative plans.

The launch opened with the premiere of Folktastic Isle – The Wheel of the Year, a music video celebrating the 24 schools and groups involved in the 2025 event. The film reflects the Island’s seasonal traditions and is now available on New Carnival’s YouTube and social media.

Organisers then revealed the 2026 theme, Folktastic Isle – Stories, Myths and Legends, explored through three strands – creatures, people and places. Inspiration includes The Gooseberry Wife, the Brighstone Dragon tree, Hobson – Hero of the Navy, Chuffle, the lost village of Wolverton and the legend of Puckaster.

New Carnival director Hannah Ray said carnival offers a creative space to explore history and identity through storytelling.

Guest speaker Paul Cowdell spoke about equality and inclusion in folklore research and highlighted Island tales including the Pied Piper of Newtown, as well as moves by UNESCO to recognise “intangible cultural heritage”.

The grand parade will take place in Ryde on July 4, with free support and workshops available through funding from Arts Council England.
