Strong winds and high tides brought more mayhem to the Island on Monday night with Cowes suffering major flooding.

There was also some flooding in Yarmouth, along the ferry terminal and Quay Street, but the businesses were protected by sand bags which kept out most of the water.

While the sea fronts across the Island including Sandown, Shanklin and Ryde all took a hit with huge waves crashing over Shanklin Promenade.

Many businesses were closed on Tuesday as a huge mopping-up operation began, with the Environment Agency saying the Island suffered some of the highest tides seen here.

There were also a series of power cuts across the Island with gas and electric services being called out.

Mark McDonald, landlord of The Globe, Cowes, said: “Our staff were stuck in the pub for some time until the water receded and we were able to get home. We were closed early on Tuesday as we had to clear-up.”

Ferries were also affected with Red Funnel, whose terminal was flooded, cancelling its Red Jet service, while Hovertravel was also out of action.
